Hi there I am Mexican who has 5 months living in California and last weekend i hear my brother in law saying this is a T.V program… Speaking about old movies bla, blabla..! and I always heard that phrase like Talking about instead of speaking about .

I just read the difference but, still kind of do not understood.. Like when you are having a propperly conversation is speak or is like the sound of the voice .. then what he used speaking about was in the wrong way or cause he was on T:V?

Aunque ambos verbos se traducen por “hablar”, como regla mnemoténica para los hispanos es mejor usar “talk” cuando en español podríamos decir “charlar” (situaciones cotianas o informales), y usar “speak” para el resto de los casos explicados arriba. Probad a traducir “talk” por “charlar” en los ejemplos que da Zac y veréis como suena natural en los ejemplos de casos informales y antinatural en el resto.

Hola Helga,

Se puede decir “He knows we are speaking about him”, pero suena mucho más natural decir “He knows we’re talking about him”.

“He knows we are talking of him” no suena muy bien.
